I would have to rate Miguel Grande a 10 on the culturally schizophrenic scale because he tries to be the epitome of the alpha male. His homophobia is displayed when he acts strict with his son and we also see his sexism because he feels he has the right to objectify women and treats them like sexual objects. Miguel Grande also has a certain degree of internalized racism because he discriminates against Latinos and hates on Maria for the way she speaks Spanish
Very similar to Miguel Grande is Mama Chona, who I would rate as a 9. She also holds internalized racism against indios or anyone that was dark skinned. This is ironic because Mama Chona comes from an indian heritage so her cultural schizophrenia is very apparent throughout the novel.
The next most culturally schizophrenic character is JoEl. He has a very complex personality due to his homosexual father and the morals Mama Chona instilled in him. He also possesses linguistic terrorism towards his mother, Angie, and is ashamed of her accent. He was brought up thinking that a person is only valuable if they have light skin and are educated.
As for Felix, I rate him a 7 because as a colonized mind, he is pressured to live a double life. As a husband and a father, he must fulfill these roles but at the same time he must also fulfill his homosexual desires. For example, when he hires men at his job, he takes it upon himself to conduct examinations that basically allow him to act sexual with these men. Felix is another character that also suffers from internalized racism, calling some of his employees "stupid wetbacks".
I consider Miguel Chico a 7 as well because of the extreme influence Mama Chona has on him, sharing the beliefs that uneducated Latinos are not up to par with educated Anglos. Miguel Chico is also culturally schizophrenic because he denies his Mexican culture when he moves to San Francisco and identifies with the American way of living.
In my opinion, Juanita is a 6 on the scale because although she was first portrayed as a strong female character, she is submissive to Miguel Grande and does not make him pay any consequences for cheating on her with her best friend, Lola. Like most of the characters, Juanita is racist against her own people and refuses to associate herself with the Mexican culture.
As for Angie, Lena, and Nina, I would group these 3 together and rate them all a 4.
The least culturally schizophrenic character in the book is Lola. Even though she did sleep with her best friend's husband, I admired Lola because she took charge of her sexuality and used it as a form of empowerment.
