I grew up with a traditional Catholic family. I am grateful for some of the morals that got instilled within me, such as valuing family, but there is definitely some aspects of Catholicism that I did not agree with. For example, I feel like women are taught that going to college is not acceptable. We are told from a young age that we must graduate high school and stay at home to cook and clean so that we can eventually marry a man who will take care of us. My older sister, who is 30 and currently working towards her PhD, is always being questioned from certain family members as to why she is focused on school and not focused on finding a man to marry. We pay no attention to these negative remarks but it is a bit disheartening to know that we are not fully supported by those we love.
I remember when I was younger I hated going to church. I thought it was the most boring thing ever and I hated that I was forced to go. I feel like this is one of the main reasons why I am not an adamant Catholic today. I still believe in God and I consider myself spiritual in that sense but I feel that a person does not need to practice an organized religion in order to be religious.
