Mama Chona gets a 10 for being the most cultural schizophrenia. I would say she is the most cultural schizophrenic because one she didn't want to talk about there earlier life in Mexico. She was ashamed and wanted her kids to learn English and be very Americanized. They want to forget there Indigoes roots. She never wanted to sit in the back of the bus because that was colored people and they should never sit in the back. She always had an umbrella with her because she didn't want to get dark even though she wasn't light skinned. I picture Mama Chona having the Nople in her for headed and still denying it.
I will place Juanita at about a 9. She is a 9 to me because she would obey what her husband say and stayed behind him even though she cheated on her and continued to cheat on her with Lola. She always wanted to believe the good in people and never let anyone talk bad about her husband or "good" fried Lola. Then she along with Lola and Miguel Grande would go to night clubs live lavish lives just like the Gringos did and once they ran out of money they stayed home. Showing how she wanted to be part of this other life yet she conformed to her life when she didn't have the mean to live this life they did not belong to.
Felix was was about a 10. He had a wife and kids who he loved very much yet he was queer. He wanted to explore with other man yet have this front of well I have a wife and kids. Then his special relationship with his son yet be this protective dad and loving dad.
Angie gets a 7. At first she embraced her culture and taught that to her kids, She would paint the rooms in her house bright colors to make her in laws upset. She was proud of who she was. Then later on she moved more to wanting the best for her kids and kind of Americanizing them. SHe wanted her daughter to get the best piano lesson for the white lady who lived in the hill. She would save her money to be able to buy the best meat for tamales for her husband for his approval.
Miguel Chico then gets about a 8. He left from were his family lived and moved to Harvard he didn't want to go home and made an excuse to not visit his family. Then playing with dolls at a very young age and being dressed like a girl his father getting upset. Then leaning about judgement day from Maria and a different religion really confused him. Then in college coming out of the closet.
Overall all of these characters had so many issues. They all had these borders they put up and I think later generations are going to loose a sense of who they are and were they came from if that already didn't happen with Mama chona not wanting to talk about her past.
