It was a complete pleasure seeing William A. Nericcio present
his talk, "From Tex[t]-Mex to Mextasy to Eyegiene: Televisually
Supercharged Hallucinations of 'Mexicans' in our Digital Humanities-laced,
Technosexually Voyeuristic Tomorrow(s)." He immediately won the crowd over
with his charm claiming he was a curator not a hoarder and how he was a high
tech Aztec. What I found quite interesting was how his book "Tex[t]-Mex:
Seductive Hallucinations of“Mexicans” in America" took about 16 years
to publish. Which evolved to a traveling exhibition, “Mextasy,” displaying an
overflowing abundance of Latina/o stereotypes among other artifacts. The 1st
part of the exhibition is artifacts, 2nd part is graphic works, and
the 3rd part is curator including local Latina/o artists. Nericcio
also offers an electronic resource, a Tex Mex gallery blog, where he says the
articles are illuminated at a greater length. One of my favorite artifacts Nericcio
displayed to us was a sign that said “Caution Mexicans.” What cracked me up was
that Nericcio said he should give it to Jan Brewer. Awesome scholar.
