JE #3A

In order for me to understand what Cultural Schizophrenia is I must define them individually. To be Cultural is to practice language and traditions determined by a common and underling ideology. To have Schizophrenia is a lack of sense, it’s a state of conscious with conflicting and incompatible forms of identity. Together, Cultural Schizophrenia is when a subject is conflicted by two or more contradicting and incompatible aspects of the various cultures.

Since I can remember I have had an identity crisis. I went to a private school were most of the students came from a middle class family. Status symbols were very much a part of the environment I grew up in. My friend would talk about the new shoes they got, the new car their parent bought, where they went for vacation, what college they were going to go to, etc. For the most part, it did not affect me until I started to be separated from my friend in the middle of class so that I could take special classes.  Since Spanish was my first language and was affecting how I spoke my teachers sent me to the bungalow to “fix” my accent. This was a major part of my grade school education. The students that were also sent the bungalow were the ones that did not participate in conversing about status symbols. I felt stupid and insignificant and hated all that did not reflect the successful students. I hated school, teachers, eventually I began to hate my friends and family; I hated myself.
