JE #8
Prior to entering this class, I had an ok understanding of the Juárez femicides. I would say that this is still my level of understanding, just because there are so many layers to these murders. There are many factors that go why these misogynistic murders take place along the border. Maybe me feeling like I don't have this brilliant understanding of these murders is because no one knows for sure who is committing the murders and why. We have theorize and play guessing games. The victim's families have to go looking for the bodies because the government doesn't care and is most likely an accomplice to these deaths. Or maybe it has to do with that feeling of helplessness we experience when we learn just how mysterious the disappearances of the women working in the maquiladoras are. I think Gregory Nava's film was effective at raising my consciousness about the Juárez femicides when it came to the fear behind these murders. I felt very nervous while watching the film because of that feeling that there was nowhere the characters could be safe.
