JE #10

Arriba arriba, andale!! Welcome to our first gathering of the summit about the Border here at the Tijuana/San Diego Border.
Welcome Ivon, Rudy, Charlie, Lauren, and David!
So I have some question for you guys!
If you had to make a show about the border what would it look like? Would it be a cartoon, a novella, or one of those TV shows?
What would the romantic relationships be like?

Ivon: I’ll go last.

Rudy: You sure!?
 (Hesitating) Ladies? First.

Ivon: I’M SURE!

Rudy: Mine would be a crazy vato loco in cape, kind of like batman and superman but better looking and Chicano.  He would be super tough with muscles everywhere especially down there and his theme song would be…. Shoot! I forgot the name of the song.
What’s the name of the song about the lowrider? well that one.
He would save damsels in distress and get all the chicks. Haha!
The border patrol never catch him and he would cross all the Mexicans across the border, because they just want a better life.
By the way Speedy, I love your show. I use to watch all the time as a kid. (Ivon laughing at Rudy)

Charlie: Well, that’s kind of strange question, (smirking) but what could you expect from a rat. I guess my cartoon would be about a border patrol bulldog that saves the Mexican Chihuahuas from bad dogs. (Ivon rolls her eyes)The border patrol dog would probably save a beautiful Chihuahua dog and live together saving other dogs.

Lauren: Mine would be kind of like a female version of superman. Her job would be as a journalist and dresses up in a costume when she goes to fight crime. She would put all the bad people in jail and she would cross the border back and forth chasing after the bad guys. Her love life would probably be, I guess, waiting for Superman. (Ivon feels upset and confused)

David: Well, i do not live close to the US-Mexican border but I guess living in Cuba and being surrounded by water is kind of like being surrounded by a border. My characters would probably live in Cuba or Mexico. If it lived in Mexico it would probably live by the border. I don’t know whether the character would be animals or people or if it would even be a cartoon. If it took place in Mexico it would probably be about a teacher who is also part of a guerilla army. It would be a violent series. He would teach about communism and what it means to be revolutionary. As for the gender of my character you would have to get back to me Speedy, I think that is an important question…
(interrupted by Ivon)

Ivon: Yes!!!  The rest of these panelist are a bunch of weirdoes and extremely problematic. I would agree with David’s interpretation but the revolutionary will be a Chicana punk character and not some stereotypical model-type of female hero. Her romantic life would be one she controls, doing it with whomever she wants.  She would define who she is and flip off anyone that feels they could define her…

(Rudy interrupts and then does Charlie which starts a jumble of arguments, Lauren eventually gets up and tries to get a word in while David and Ivon sideline themselves to discuss a possible future project together)
