Mama Chona- I would
rate Mama Chona a 10 because she seems to be the most cultural schizophrenic. Even Mickie or Miguel Chico starts to realize
it because of the way she would tell her stories and he often questioned what
she really saw of herself when she looked in the mirror. She wanted her grandchildren to speak English
properly and not the way she did.
Angie- 3 because I am not sure if she is fully suffering from cultural schiz but has other characteristics such as having linguistic terrorism
Felix- 8 murdered, was married, had family, but
fooled around with men. I think a lot of his cultural schizophrenia stemmed from his sexuality. He was bisexual but I think he felt like he couldn't fully express that because it isn't accepted in Mexican/Catholic culture.
Miguel Grande- 7, he was machismo, cheating on
wife (With her best friend) wanted best of both worlds but at the same time he was all for assimilating and being American.
Miguel Chico- 9 reading about him getting an education an moving away gave me the impression that he was running away from his reality. Also, I think he experienced a lot of historical amnesia because like his grandmother he would retell and change stories to make them sound better
Juanita- 4 She dealt with different aspects
of oppression and I think it really affected her thinking. For example, she saw Mexican/Indian as impure
or dirty and she was also submissive to husband. Personally I saw her as a pushover, still holding on tightly to her patriarchal culture.
Lola- I would rate Lola a 5. I think she was probably the least affected,
but nonetheless, she was still culturally schizophrenic. I think she internalized it more though. For example, she always wanted to feel loved
or wanted even going so far as to have an affair with her BEST FRIEND’S
husband. That might have stemmed from a
deeper feeling of being oppressed or neglected so she searched elsewhere to
make herself feel better or worthy.
JoEl- I don't think I knew enough about his character to say that he was necessarily dealing with cultural schizophrenia himself, but I think he did show some signs by sometimes making fun of his mother for being "too mexican." I feel like it can be a close for most characters but If I ultimately had to rate him, it would be a 2 or 3
Nina- 4 she forces her kids to speak English which is an immediate clue that she suffers with some cultural schiz because she wants them to be Americanized, but I would still go as far as to say that it wasn't as extreme as other characters.
Lena-0 or 1, I didn't get the feeling that she was dealing with cultural schizophrenia because i think she was the most conscious of what was going on in the community and with her culture.
