Attending ¡Ser!
this evening was one of the most rewarding things to be a part of after taking
a class like Border Consciousness. The performance was a one-woman show, where Karen
Anzoategui spoke about her life experiences through her love of soccer. She
spoke of her two homes, Los Angles and Buenos Aires and spoke openly about how
people would challenge her identities and therefore impose borders. She demonstrates
how from a young age she had a problematic relationship with her mother because
of her idolization for Diego Maradona. She speaks openly about the ways in
which she stood up to her mother, father, brothers and even schoolteacher, in
attempts of being accepted the way she was. One of my favorite scenes is when
Karen goes with Tomas to watch Argentina play a friendly match against Mexico
and in that time, has obscenities yelled at her and things thrown but her
spirit remained high. It is clear that from a young age she was able to express the high-level of optimism and resiliency she showed on stage.
