Extra Credit Post: Bruin Standard "'Illegal Immigrant' - A Crime, Not a Race"

So pretty much this article was a response to USAC's efforts to stop the use of the phrase "illegal immigrant" from campus dialect. The newspaper's main argument was that USAC has no right to decide was is and what isn't ok to say (so freedom of speech pretty much). The title of the article speaks for itself as well; "'Illegal Immigrant' - A Crime, Not a Race". This infuriates me so much because this country criminalizes immigrants and it is not fair because the only reason immigrants are seen as "criminals" is because of the laws that are imposed on them. The other Chicana/o Studies class that I took this quarter was on deportation campaigns and a lot of what I read for that class was narratives of the personal stories of undocumented immigrants. Mostly all of them said that they came to this country for a better life and that their only crime was working too hard.

The struggle is real for a lot of undocumented immigrants yet the privileged members of the Bruin Standard are over here complaining that they can't be stopped from using language that is apparently legal. Clearly, something is a little off here and from what I can see, white people need to not get their underwear in a bunch from something that is sooo irrelevant in comparison to the hundreds of years that minorities have been oppressed.
