JE#1B: The Lone Ranger
I had never before heard the the Texas Rangers before or rather that they actually had constituted a group of law enforcement agents at one point in Texas. For me, it very much falls into the historical trope of the white savior/hero. The feats of the rangers against Native Americans and Mexican communities are glamorized and romanticized. Moreover, there's a problematic racial dichotomy where the "good guy" is white and is set against the "bad guy" who is typically of color. Moreover, I cannot help but imagine the erasure of historical context with the Texas rangers and the Indian. From one viewpoint, rangers are looked at as heroes for defending their own communities against attacks from outside groups who wish to do their own harm. In another light, these white men can also be seen as genocidal invaders who have usurped the land from its original inhabitants and defend their actions with further killing and a restructuring of history and representation. As a child, I believe shows like Walker, Texas Ranger and countless others probably fell into this category, but I was never intrigued by them nor will I probably ever be.
