Lone Ranger seems to me as the oppressor to the Texans lands. After reading the history of the Texas Rangers it seems to me that this “safety” force used their authority to keep Mexicans and Native Americans oppressed in their lands. Lone Ranger protects a border, which was conquered from Mexico during the Mexican American War. Tonto is portrayed as a loyal companion to the white man and seems to conform to the laws that are put forth by the US government. From the episode that I saw, a white man needed to save the Native American people from being considered renegades because their supplies from the US government were being raided. The Native Americans were not trusted and so only the word of the Lone Ranger was trusted when he discovered the actual thieves. Tonto, who was loyal to the white man, was considered a renegade by another white man, which shows how little respect they had for Native Americans and those who were loyal to the white man’s cause. Tonto and Lone Ranger were different from Speedy in that I did not notice many negative stereotypes of Native Americans in the same manner that were negative stereotypes of Mexicans in Speedy’s show. Although Tonto and Lone Ranger were seen in the episode shown as saving the Native Americans from relocation, Lone Ranger is still a force of oppression by keeping the Native Americans confined to a small space of land. In conclusion, Lone Ranger and Tonto better portray their communities, but they are still oppressing people to set borders by the white man.
