As mentioned on my previous blog, growing up I did not care
for the character of Speedy Gonzalez. I could not see myself as this character.
In response to Matthew Hunter’s blog, I did not respond positively to its’
reasoning. This is because I did not think the show nor Speedy correctly
represented my culture or ethnic background. As much as Matthew tries to say
that Speedy was a good representative of my culture and ethnic background, the
more I garner distaste for Speedy for his wrongful portrayal of myself and my
community. One of the reasons why we have not seen Speedy back on air is
because of how badly he represents the Mexican identity. In the show, Speedy’s
enemies are seen as drunken Mexicans in cantinas. What are young kids learning
from this cartoon who can easily be misled into believing that what they see on
the television is true in real life. Especially if non-Latino kids are watching
this show they will only see one portrayal of my community and it is not being
portrayed in a positive manner. If non-Latino kids only see this as a portrayal
of my community then kids would only assume that this is what my community amount
too and could possibly lead to teasing and bullying. Speedy’s stereotypical
portrayal of my community can also amount to less pride in our culture simply
because it is being mocked for the entire world to see. In my opinion, Speedy
does not correctly portray my community and so the articles did not change my
opinion or view of the show.
