JE 1A
I never liked older looking cartoons like Tom and Jerry and Speedy Gonzales and all that Acne stuff, I was more into Ed, Edd, & Eddy and Rocko's Modern Life and stuff like that. That's just me, personal preference. As a little boy, like most of us, I didn't have a critical super conscious mindset for everything that I saw on television so the stereotypical depictions of Speedy Gonzales never really hit home offensively. and because I never watched the show, I didn't really care much as I got older. But now I have to do some research on him and the Lone Ranger! I've always found racism that's glued to the American past (like this oh so delightful TV show) really funny and peculiar, but it never really outrages me. Racism outrages me, but the old relics of racism do not. Why? I've asked myself the same thing. (Why aren't I mad? Am I suppose to be? Am I suppose to be steaming with anger towards white America and its sick sense of entertainment?) I mean, yeah, it does make me scratch my head to think that something so blatantly offensive once passed as entertainment for America now falls into a convenient black void in our culture's unconscious as if it never existed. However, I just kind of laugh at the fact. I'm never going to forget how racist this TV show is. But I'm also not always going to remember.
