In seeing The Lone Ranger episode I can't help but think that this
was the epitome of what kids loved playing growing up, a good round
of cowboys and Indians. With that hope that you weren't the Indians
because you would have to be the one tied up like bait. I felt like
the underlying message with the whole show was to show an aim of
attempting to have good ties and relationships with Native Tribes.
Although not sure how that plays out when we see the Natives being
portrayed with having little to no knowledge on how to speak properly
and the defenselessness they're portrayed as being.
Tonto the sidekick definitely played a interesting role in the
whole in the show. The loyal, the gentle, the respectful Native
sidekick that serves the Lone Ranger. Seeing the extent to which he
was going to keep quiet really amazed me, the level of loyalty to
take whippings really delivered a message of paying a price for
whiteness/colonialism.
I can also see from the research how shining the lone ranger in
good light came to be since the Texas rangers became known worldwide
“heroes” from what I read. After declaring independence, Texas
sought out security and safety from these valiant heroes that would
protect the civilians from Indian rampage and Mexican guerrilla
tactics. For some odd reason, I can't help but feel the same way
towards the rangers as I do with border patrol, not sure why though.
