JE#1B

The first thing that captures my attention when watching this short episode of the Lone Ranger, is the fact that his indian sidekick is named "Tonto," which ironically means idiot in Spanish. Compared to the Lone Ranger, Tonto, is never active but rather portrayed as a passive character along with all the other Indian-Americans in the episode. Supplement this with the fact that Tonto and all other Indian-Americans are speaking broken English, and you get an idea that Indian-Americans are being portrayed as being less intelligent than the white westerners. In its totality, the Lone Ranger, was dripping with white savior syndrome where this masked man, "saved the day" and the helpless Indian-Americans from (the real problem here) corrupt rangers that were not sufficiently satisfied with having taken native land, but now were also stealing the supplies coming into the reservation.

Unlike Speedy Gonzales, especially as read through Matthew Hunter's tribute to Speedy, the racial profiling and stereotyping taking place in the Lone Ranger is not questionable. Atleast within Speedy episodes, our radical little mouse always prevails over the "Greengo Poosygato" as an active character in his own salvation. However in the Lone Ranger, white man saves as white man takes.
